Once connected, the assistant works with your real Wishpile account, so anything it changes shows up in the app right away. It sees only what you can see, and it never spoils a surprise.
Connect in ChatGPT
Wishpile isn't in ChatGPT's directory yet, so for now you add it yourself. Do this on chatgpt.com on a computer. It uses ChatGPT's developer mode, which OpenAI offers on some plans only.
- Open Settings, then Apps, then Advanced settings, and turn on Developer mode.
- Back in Apps, choose Create. (On some plans this is Plugins, then +, then Add custom MCP server.)
- Name it Wishpile, enter the address
https://wishpile.com/mcp, and choose OAuth for sign-in. - Read the warning about custom apps, agree to it, and create the app.
- Sign in to Wishpile if you're asked, then tap Allow on Allow ChatGPT to use your Wishpile account?
- Start a new chat, type @ and pick Wishpile, then ask your question.
ChatGPT's menus change from time to time, so the names may differ a little.
Connect in Claude
Wishpile is in the Claude connectors directory.
- Open Wishpile in the Claude directory, or in Claude open Customize, then Connectors, and find Wishpile.
- Click Connect.
- Sign in to Wishpile if you're asked, then tap Allow.
- In a chat, check that Wishpile is on: tap the + button, then Connectors.
Wishpile shows a Community label in the directory, and Claude reminds you before connecting that Anthropic hasn't reviewed it in depth. That's the usual label for connectors made by companies other than Anthropic.
Tip: Can't find Wishpile in Claude's list? Add it yourself: under Connectors, use Add custom connector with the address
https://wishpile.com/mcp. Claude's menus change from time to time, so the names may differ a little.
Things to try
- How am I doing on Christmas shopping?
- What should I get Maya? (It starts with what's still available on her wishlist and keeps to her budget.)
- Add this to my wishlist: (paste a product link)
- I bought the scarf for Mom. Mark it bought.
- Help me set up Christmas for my family.
What it can and can't do
It can read and change your wishlists, gift lists, people, gifts and budgets, claim items from wishlists in your groups, and start a new gift list or wishlist group.
It can't send anything to anyone. Share links and invite links come back to you to send yourself. It also can't add people to a group by name (they join through the invite link, with their own wishlist), set up or draw a Secret Santa, or delete a group. Use the app for those.
Good to know
- It acts as you, and only sees what you can see in the app.
- Surprises stay secret. It can never see what's been claimed from your own wishlists, or who drew whom in a Secret Santa.
- ChatGPT and Claude check with you before anything is deleted.
- It uses your currency from Profile settings. Say so if a price is in another one ("add it at £45"), and totals that mix currencies come back as approximate.
- What you type in the chat is handled by OpenAI or Anthropic under their own privacy policies. Wishpile only receives the requests the assistant makes, like "add this item". See our privacy policy.
- To disconnect, remove Wishpile in the assistant's settings.
- If the assistant doesn't seem to know about something new in Wishpile, start a new chat. If that doesn't help, disconnect Wishpile and connect it again.
